A number of companies have been negatively impacted by ransomware. Many of these companies have failed to update or patch their systems since 2019 (prior to the pandemic). Recently, security company Edgescan found a 40% increase of unpatched systems in 2020, driven by the volume of patches released during the pandemic by companies such as Microsoft and Adobe.
During the pandemic, companies have found it difficult to patch their systems due to the volume of work, and the fact that many of their patching solutions are focused on devices being on network. Microsoft released many security updates in 2020, but many people aren’t patching what they have because their teams are so busy and are putting themselves at major risk. This is a dangerous combination because even if you have trained your staff not to click on hazardous emails. Research from companies such as KnowBe4, have found that 4% of employees even with periodic phishing training can be a successful target.
