SEC Proposes to Update Accredited Investor Definition to Increase Access to Investments

Dec 18, 2019

December 2019

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that they have voted to propose amendments to the definition of accredited investor, which would modernize the approach that determines who is eligible to participate in private capital markets. The proposed amendments would allow more people and entities to qualify as accredited investors based on more sophisticated criteria than the current binary approach that only takes income and net worth into consideration. Additional modifications to the existing definition would also be made under this proposed amendment.

Read the official press release from the Securities and Exchange Commission for more detail on the new categories of natural persons and entities that would be added.
