Securing the Spotlight: Cybersecurity Best Practices for Studio Vendors

Articles by: Richey May, Jul 23, 2024

The increasing demand for new content coupled with the increased reliance on technology for speed of production, makes it imperative for studio vendors to have effective cybersecurity measures in place to keep content secure through all phases. Since Richey May works closely with studios and their vendors, we’ve seen many times how a leak in the process can have detrimental impacts on a studio vendor and the studios they work with.  Adhering to industry standards, such as the Motion Picture Association’s (MPA) Best Practices, can help you implement a cybersecurity program that will protect content from potential breaches, protect personally identifiable information, and build trust and credibility with the studios you serve.

Foundational Security Protocols

Studio vendors should implement foundational security protocols including effective encryption methods for data at rest and in transit. Encryption methods ensure that sensitive information is shielded from unauthorized access. Studios should also invest in advanced anti-virus and anti-malware solutions, in addition to securing their networks with firewalls, Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions, and intrusion detection systems.

Frequent Training

Human error remains one of the largest security vulnerabilities. Frequent training sessions that include, but are not limited to phishing, vishing, and other social engineering tactics can equip employees with the knowledge to recognize malicious activities. Studio vendors should encourage a culture of security awareness, emphasizing the importance of following protocols and reporting suspicious activities.

Tiered Access & Multi-factor Authentication

The protection of important assets enhances the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of your content and improves trust and relationships with the studios you serve. One of the ways to drive this forward is ensuring access to sensitive data is strictly controlled using a tiered access model. Only personnel who need access to perform their job functions should be granted it, and even then, it should be limited to what is necessary. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a supplemental layer of security, ensuring that compromised credentials alone cannot grant an intruder access.

Regular Risk Assessments

Performing routine tests of risk and compliance processes helps identify vulnerabilities before they are exploited. By regularly reviewing and updating security policies and conducting internal and external risk assessments, content studios can stay compliant with the latest industry standards and regulations. This proactive approach enhances security and builds trust with stakeholders and content owners. Regularly reviewing and updating security policies and procedures is crucial to ensure alignment with the current threat landscape and regulatory requirements.

Incident Response Plan

Incidents and disasters are inevitable and having a strong incident response plan (IRP) in place is crucial. The IRP must include steps to mitigate damage, communication plans with internal and external stakeholders, and methods to eradicate and learn from the incident. Similarly, a disaster recovery plan ensures that studio vendors can promptly restore operations with minimal disruption, preserving both data integrity and business continuity.

By implementing these best practices, content studio vendors can significantly enhance their cybersecurity posture. Embracing a holistic approach to cybersecurity not only safeguards intellectual property but also reinforces the studio’s reputation as a secure and reliable service provider in the entertainment industry. The Richey May Cyber experts can serve as an excellent resource, supporting studio vendors in navigating the complex world of digital security and protecting your most valuable titles.
